"E" is for Entrepreneur -- want some??

Mrs. M in her convertible -- Isn't she
cute??  Love the flower... and the lady
This is an open letter to would-be entrepreneurs, and maybe a little bit to Mrs. McCrabby, who has stuck by her entrepreneur for 40+ years....    Thank you, Mrs. M.

McCrabby is an entrepreneur.  Who knew 25 - 30 years ago, when McCrabby was working for IBM, and then a couple of IBM value added resellers?  But, when those companies couldn't meet expectations, welshed on commitments, and/or just didn't deliver as expected, McCrabby decided to "go it on his own."

So, people ask, don't you just LOVE being an entrepreneur?  Yes, it has some seductive qualities:

  • The business owner “answers only to yourself;” at least that's the idea
  • She “sets the rules,” in most cases
  • He “make makes all of the decisions.” Or so the myth goes
  • The leap out of safe, corporate life seems so daunting; the assumption is that those who manage to make it, must revel in their days of self-actualized bliss.
“It must be great to be your own boss! Is it everything you ever dreamed it would be?” McCrabby is afraid it is; but, perhaps not quite in the way the questioner assumes.  It's been stated, and entrepreneurs understand, that entrepreneurial-ism is more like a mental illness than a state of nirvana.
So, let's clear it up.  McCrabby loves being entrepreneurial (let's call all future references to entrepreneurs or entrepreneur-ism, as "E", so McCrabby doesn't have to keep spelling it).  BUT, before you tell off your boss, and storm out to open your own pizza shop, let's examine some of the other aspects that make up the E lifestyle.

Although non-E's won't get it,  you can’t stop thinking about your idea/your business and how to make it better 24/7.   At bedtime, as you watch TV, while attending  your kids' dance recitals, during your morning shower, at the gym, through meals, at the movies, whenever, your thoughts will inevitably turn to your business, at least on occasion.   This isn't to say that you can't focus on other things, or enjoy other events, but there's always a little something in the back of your mind, reminding you that you have one more to do that isn't quite done yet.

“Are you happy all the time?” No.  It's hard work, and you don't get paid if you don't produce.  And, there will be times when you don't produce; when that happens you have nothing to fall back on (i.e. a company paycheck), and a bad month is a really bad month.  Working hard doesn't guarantee anything, but not working hard does--a bad month is a really bad month.

“When did you know you wanted to leave the safe corporate life and take this huge risk?”  Or, maybe that's a WHY, instead of when.  Established E's  have described their founding process as a growing realization that it’s what they had to do – in spite of knowing it would lead to some impending pain and heartache. It was a steady, unwavering pull (or push) to start something new.

For most E's, this E process is a never-ending lesson in humility. If you are effective (read: successful), you associate and team up with people who are smarter than you are.  If you are to keep those smart people around, you nurture them and reward them, even before you reward yourself.  You applaud their achievements publicly while addressing your own (and the company's) problems in silence.  You invest to provide them the tools to be successful, while you drive a 12 year old car.
Here's a new idea....

And, while some friends will inevitably think you write yourself a "BONUS" check each year, like the Wall Street firms do, you're more apt to apply any "extra" that might be in the company coffers, to estimated taxes and excess FICA, new software, or an updated webpage and marketing materials.  There is always something else to pay besides the E.

Most E's are not filthy rich.  And thankfully, most don't do it for the money.  It's been stated that two thirds of businesses fail in the first two years and that 80% fail within five.  Maybe the typical E is driving a 12 year old car (and Mrs. M's is ten years old), and maybe he doesn't write himself big bonus checks, but he's consumed by the business.  He loves doing his business and wants to improve it every day.

Entrepreneurial-ism equates to optimism.  It's a feeling that tomorrow can be better than today.  It's a belief that tomorrow will be better.

Curtis Funding Group (CFG) was started in 2012, because it was difficult for a 60-year old to find a good job, even with tons of successful experience and a passion to work. It was started because E is the way to go for this individual.  It was started because the E was too old to change his ways, he wanted to have fun, he didn't want to answer to others, and he wanted to treat clients, suppliers, staff, etc. the way he thought they should be treated.

Now, other E's have joined CFG and they aren't young either.  But they know what they're doing, they share a belief in treating people with respect and honesty, and they have a stronger work ethic than most 30-somethings McCrabby has worked with.   McCrabby didn't seek out these E's, but they knew the reputation, they saw the goals, and they fit the brand.

At this age, it is a fact that for McCrabby it is not worth working with ANYONE that isn't trusted and liked. Those that have joined the team, are likable, hard-working, ethical, and share the vision.  Click on the company logo to see our people on our website.

CFG wasn't started so its owner could jump out of bed every day and burst into song about how great E is.  McCrabby doesn't spend his entire day whistling about the excitement of becoming E.  He started Curtis Funding Group as a chance to make a difference; and now, with more people on the team, it's giving them a chance to make a difference, too.

If you're considering leaving the corporate world for E, and you want some counsel, or just a listening ear, before you tell your boss he's an idiot, drop McCrabby a line (try emailing him at cmac@curtisfunding.com) and we'll discuss it.  And, if you'd like to see the post announcing the new company, you can read it here: McCrabby Starts New

Thank you to 200,000 readers

McCrabby has spent more than three years writing, although not often in the past 12 months..  Focusing on job-search topics early on, he later mixed in some satire, a little righteous indignation, and some pet peeves...  As he progressed, and slowed down on the job-search workshops and assistance, and the majority of posts here moved to the satire and righteous indignation arena.

Thanks for reading.  After starting a new company in 2012, the time to write blog posts was shifted mostly to making the new company work.  You can view that company at www.curtisfunding.com, or you can look at us on LinkedIn COMPANY.  We would appreciate it if you would "FOLLOW" us on LinkedIn, as it shows our young company as more established.   If 200,000 readers were to follow Curtis Funding Group, we'd look really big...

So, this is simply a big THANK YOU from McCrabby.  He appreciates the readership more than you know.  This blog is therapy for McCrabby, and he's hoping you have found something that makes you think, or makes you laugh, or makes you happy or mad, or sad.  He hopes you'll go back and look around again, as there is some pride in some of the topics tackled.

We hope job-seekers found some counsel to be meaningful, and McCrabby continues to provide that to those who seek it.  Just email McCrabby and he WILL respond.

If you have an idea that you'd like to see explored, leave a comment here, or email McCrabby and he'll take a look.

Writing is a passion, but so is a successful business, so that's been the focus.  But, there is some time available, so let's keep going together.  Let's keep growing together.  Share what makes you mad, sad, glad, bad, or crabby.  McCrabby will try to do the same.

Resumes with Pizzazz - and McCrabby's help...

This is a re-run; McCrabby ran this in 2012 and helped some readers upgrade their resumes, enhance their base cover letters, and to stand out when hiring managers are sifting through applicants, deciding upon which candidates to select for interviews.  .

And, the rates have not changed for readers here.  If you need help, let us know ant we'll still work under the same commitments we made two years ago.
________________________________________________

2012 --  McCrabby has worked with some clients to help them jump-start their job search, or to help them RE-jump-start it.  Are you not getting where you want to go?  Do you want a new resume done that gets noticed?  We just did a new resume for a client in Knoxville.  That resume, along with some coaching and brainstorming (90 minutes or more) has gotten her moving forward with her job-search.

While McCrabby has been focusing on his new company (which is going very well, thank you), he has spent some evenings, and weekend hours continuing to help job-searchers prepare.

To that end, he has offered readers here a discounted rate to get a resume done that has some flair and gets noticed.  If you want a resume like this, some tips to get follow on interviews, and some personal interaction with someone to help you get there, contact us at this site (  mccrabby@humantransitions.com  let's use my company email so you'll get a quicker response:  cmac@curtisfunding.com   ) and you'll get some help.

The standard rate for this help is $85/hour, which we think is a good rate.  For readers at this blog, the rate is now $65/hour.  It will take about 3-5 hours to do a complete and professional resume, and another 1-2 hours to put a professional cover letter, with letterhead, footers, color, etc.  Included with that effort, is at least a half-hour via phone to help kick things off. McCrabby asks for a paypal deposit (we will provide that info) for the estimated amount, and promises to finish all work within one week.

McCrabby

Mr. Thief, we caught you!! - Job-seekers, don't get scammed...

So, Mr. Thief, you thought you could steal money from McCrabby's account, or from the poor, uneducated people you prey upon, by using McCrabby's business account.  Well, WE CAUGHT YOU!!!

Well, we didn't actually catch YOU, but we caught what you were doing and we stopped it, 20 minutes after your first victim tried to cash a check on McCrabby's business account.  How do you like them apples, Mr. Thief??

Yes, you cost McCrabby a little time, and about a hundred bucks to reprint checks for the new account that was opened within 20 minutes to replace the one you hacked.  But no more...  And, we have copies of the fraud checks you wrote, and of the bogus emails you sent, and we've filed it all with the police -- we realize it probably won't stop you, but..  it stopped you this time; now you can go print some new checks from some other account and start again.

For those honest people reading this post, perhaps an explanation is in order.  So, here goes:  Some slug of an individual apparently got a copy of, or at least a look at, one of McCrabby's business account checks.  By taking that information (routing number and account number) to some printing company, this slug (can't think of a better word) printed up checks under the company name with the existing routing and account numbers.

Then, he preyed upon uneducated, poor people, who needed money, and "hired" people on Craigslist, or other places, and sent them $2000 - $2500 in fraudulent checks.  He told them to keep the $400-$500 he agreed to pay them, and then to "send on" the remainder to some other slug.

The victim (no other word here, either) goes to his bank, cashes the check, and wires $1500 - $2000 on to some "contractor" or "other service provider," who is "fixing up the home we're moving to" or performing some other service.

A day or two later, when the bank that cashed the check discovers it was bogus, they ask the victim for their money back.  The victim, has to return the money they kept, PLUS the "extra" funds that they have already forwarded on to a now-vanished recipient.

Don't fall for this -- if it sounds too good to be true... you know the rest.

Anyway, Mr. Thief (Mr. Slug), we caught it and you aren't getting any money here.

Might we suggest that you take all this energy and effort, and work a legitimate business, where your talents will be recognized and you can still sleep at night.

How's that work for you?

OMG -- I'm a LION, & I'm not lyin'

Thanks to the readers of this blog, who have flattered this writer and asked to connect on LinkedIn, McCrabby (aka: Curt) is now a LinkedIn LION.

This new honor was not sought.  No one here set a goal of LION-status.  In fact, many previous LinkedIn contacts, that were not well known, have been removed in the past, keeping a connection list of less than 500 (the LION level).  The thinking was always that networking should be limited to well-known contacts.

However, with increased business exposure from starting a new company (Curtis Funding Group) a year ago, and with requests to connect by readers here (connections are accepted from anyone who says they read this blog - flattery gets you connected), the LION threshold was surpassed.  Please hold your applause.

LION stands for Linked In Open Networker, and basically means a member has more than 500 connections.  Wow!!  McCrabby doesn't even think that he knows 500 people, but he sure appreciates that so many want to be connected to him.  He's not sure why.

So, this "honor" is humbly accepted with the hope that McCrabby is worthy of the praise and status that is certain to accompany it.

Is there an award or any cash that comes with this??

McCrabby quits ranting... writing

This is not quite the end, but close.  This blog will become much less active, starting today.  For those that have not "gotten" the point, or who have not agreed with, or liked, McCrabby's rants, it seems like Thanksgiving is a good time to wrap it up. You'll have one more thing to be thankful for.

McCrabby has written more than 175 posts over the past two years, approximately one every four days, has gotten 100,000+ readers during that time, and had some fun.  He attempted to help job-seekers, but expanded into common sense issues, or lack-of-common-sense, and it's been fun to read the comments from readers, to get some feedback, to help a few out-of-work folks and basically have a license to write about whatever seemed worthy of writing.

But, while you may see an occasional post in the future, the regularity will be gone, and there are several reasons:
  1. While the ideas never seem to run out, we've hit most of the job-search ideas that we wanted to hit, and we don't want to turn this into rants, alone.  We're still willing to help job-searchers, and we even helped a reader this week with her resume and cover letter, but there isn't a lot more to hit (so go back and read some of the old posts).
  2. Regarding the rants, it's been interesting how readers interpret satire.  McCrabby has been "accused" of being a left-wing, liberal spendthrift, who shouldn't write about politics, and he's been "accused" of being right-wing, tea-party militia, who shouldn't write about politics.  There is a hint of satisfaction that the opinions are that varied.
  3. While writing about the Detroit Police Department, Congressional wrong-doings, questionable legal maneuvering, and other non-common-sense topics is interesting and fun (sometimes), these subjects can become depressing, or at least frustrating.  Only so much tongue-in-cheek can be written about greed, power, and stupidity before the reality of our situation hits home.
  4. It's time to quit spending time writing for 150-250 readers per day.  It's fun to have an impact, or to at least know that people are reading what you write, but we had hoped to reach many more people, and a non-sponsored blog isn't the best vehicle for reaching thousands of people.
  5. Upsetting people who don't understand satire upsets this writer, as well.  We don't want to upset people; we just wanted to help a little, and maybe make people think a little, and then maybe give them a smile.  We did some of that, but probably not enough.
  6. There is no pay for this effort.  If a newspaper, or some other paying source would like to pick up a column, and offer some compensation for the effort, you'll see more writing.  Short of that happening, there won't be much more.  It takes time to write, and while it is something this writer, and every writer I know, finds enjoyable, and therapeutic, he'll write more privately in the future.
So, if you have been a regular reader, thank you.  If you have been an occasional reader, thank you, too.  If this is the first thing you've ever read here, go back and see some older stuff; we think some of it is pretty good.  And, if you have an idea for something that NEEDS to be written, and you want someone to write it, let us know.

Thank you to all.

Earn income while looking for work - #2

McCrabby's continuing to look for ways to suggest to readers to earn some income, while looking for work.  After sharing one, where you could work for McCrabby, a week ago (CLICK:  #1), McCrabby has found another, right under his nose.

McCrabby's daughter, a lovely young lady who lives in the Grand Rapids area, signed on to work with Premier Designs Jewelry one year ago.  McCrabby has watched while she developed this MLM opportunity, and he studied her progress (and her success) over the past year.

She has proved that someone who is personable, hard working and willing to spend some evening hours developing this type of business, can make a decent supplemental income (in fact she may make much more eventually), without taking time out of her normal work-hours day.  And, she has made significantly more in that year than her notes below suggest.

So, here is another opportunity, and if you're interested, you can do this anywhere, and McCrabby's daughter will help you each step of the way.  Here is her summary, as she detailed it to McCrabby.

Earn income while looking for work - #1

This is the first of these posts....

When someone is out of work, their primary job is to find a job.  But, a corresponding effort is to produce enough income during that job gap to survive, pay the existing bills, and to not fall too far behind on obligations.  Like it or not, serious shortfalls can affect credit scores, and credit scores can affect job opportunities.

McCrabby wants to provide some suggestions of ways to supplement your income while you look for your dream job.  He is searching for opportunities, whether they're on-line, part-time, MLM, or any other way to generate income for people who have had problems generating income for some time.

So, if you have some, please send them (EMAIL McCrabby), so they can be vetted.  McCrabby wants to do some checking to determine (within reason) the viability of the opportunities.  If they look good, they'll be detailed here.

There are a lot of job-scams out there, but there are some legitimate methods to earn extra  income; they may not be a fit for everyone, or even for most, but here's hoping readers will share some ideas, and that McCrabby can share with readers.

So, here is the first one.  This one doesn't need to be vetted, because it's McCrabby's own company, Curtis Funding Group (CFG).  This company provides funding for companies and municipalities to acquire the equipment they need to do the business they need to do.  Business is improving for this new venture (although we've done this kind of work for 20 years), but the CFG staff is not aware of every company or municipality that needs money to acquire equipment.

So, Curtis Funding is doing two things:

  • We are selectively seeking 2-5 more honest, hard-working people who can sell (relationship selling) to executives, and who understand the concept of providing this kind of service in a business-like and ethical manner.  It's a commission-only, contract job, but there is a very aggressive commission plan in place (starting at 55% of fees earned), and it's a job that can be done from a home-based business, in almost any U.S. location.  If you have an interest in finding out more, please send a resume to (click here:  CMacRae).
  •
  • Without making the jump above, and since a major part of the job involves "finding the business," we're searching for people to provide knowledge of companies or municipalities that need equipment financed.  If they simply let CFG folks know of a need and CFG then does the work to generate a sale, CFG will provide a spiff (salesman's term for kickback) of 10 per cent of the total fees earned.
While equipment leases range from $5,000 to several million dollars, a typical $50,000 lease,  usually earns a fee in the $800-$2,500 range, so commissions, or even spiffs, can be substantial.

If you're interested in either of the above, let us know.  If you have opportunities that you believe we should share, please let us know that, too.

It's still a tough jobs market, no matter what the press says, so let's help each other.

Good luck to all of you.

Job search - Missing morale, motivation, money

Dear McCrabby,

I need help.  Haven't worked for two years, running out of the three M's... morale, motivation, money.  I'm doing all you detailed in your workshop, and I've had interviews, I've gotten close, finished second a couple times, but no offers yet.

Any other ideas?

Missing motivation in Monroe
_________________________________________________

Dear MmM:

First, you are not alone.  That may not help, but it is true.  The economy is turning slowly (and slowly, seems to be the operative word there), but it has improved some.

And, while McCrabby has restarted a company (See Entrepreneurship: McCrabby starts his own company) he did a lot of looking at other opportunities, and also came close on some major assignments, but ultimately decided that he's the best boss he's ever had.

So, we all adjust our targets, go after what we can with the most gusto (and motivation) we can, and make a success of what's achievable.  Be the best you can be.

Will McCrabby continue to keep his eyes open for the perfect, high-income, unbelievable-benefits position?  Absolutely, but now, with a new company formed, and with two people joining the company to work in partnership, and with new business relationships created and new affiliations forged, Curtis Funding Group will be McCrabby's home.  In fact, since CFG is so new, an effort is being made to "beef up" the presence on LinkedIn, so if you have an extra 20 seconds, it would be much appreciated if you'd "FOLLOW" Curtis Funding Group on LinkedIn (FOLLOW).

In fact, since two people have "come on board," it's become apparent that this is a good way to go, and a positive reputation in the equipment leasing industry has staked Curtis Funding Group to a great start.  The company will probably even add 1-3 more selling partners in the next few months.  So, for any readers that can sell, that may have some background in commercial finance or real estate, and that want a lucrative commission plan under contract, give Curtis Funding a call (248.238.7214).

We've even published our commission plan on our BoxNet files at our LinkedIn profile, where it is stored under "Broker Agreement."

And, if anyone else knows of a corporation or municipality that needs equipment financing dollars, please drop a comment here, or email McCrabby.    We'll pay a finders fee -- we all help each other..

So, what else can you do?  Stay positive, stay involved and surround yourself with support.

In the meantime, feel free to follow McCrabby at this blog, or on Twitter, where these posts will be tweeted, or join one of our two LinkedIn groups
  • McCrabby Support - a group to offer positive support to one another, whether it's for job-searching to weight loss, to kicking habits, or whatever
  • GET TO WORKshop - a group that shares job-search information, networking events, tips and techniques to aid the job search, and any other topic related to finding work (also very supportive)
Thanks for reading, and good luck on your job-search.
