Dear McCrabby, I'm on every job
board; I should be working soon.....
Dear McCrabby,
I have had my resume on Careerbuilder, Monster, LinkedIn, Indeed, and 15-20 other job boards for the past six months. I’ve submitted my resume more than 1,400 times; I had three phone interviews and one in-person interview – I didn’t get that job.
Two months ago I subscribed to a resume spreader, and it cost me about fifty bucks for three months or so (it was a rabbit or spider or something). It was supposed to send my resume to another 50 job boards, or was it 100, or a 1,000? I can’t remember, but I do know that I haven’t gotten a single interview.
McCrabby, what else can I do?
Spending for sending resumes
_______________________________________________
Dear Spending
McCrabby fell into that trap a couple years ago. He spent $49.99 (that’s a guess) for a resume distributor to distribute resumes to a whole plethora of job boards. The problems with that??
- McCrabby did not get one interview from that in three months
- The only feedback received was requests to renew the resume spreader subscription
So, let’s stress something here. It’s important not to make a blanket statement that job boards are worthless, because someday you may get an interview or even a job; but don’t count on it. Don’t spend eight hours a day on job boards, but NETWORK!!!
If you aren’t networking, you’re not getting where you want to go. NETWORK!! That means, craft a positive, complete LinkedIn profile, make connections on line, and more importantly, in person. Make an impact with your networking. NETWORK!!!
It takes time, it may have some minimal cost, but it’s vital. The best way to get a job is to be friends or family with the hiring manager; the next best way is to be friends with someone who is friends with the hiring manager; the next best way is to know someone who knows someone who... You know the rest. NETWORK!!! . NETWORK!!! . NETWORK!!! . NETWORK!!! ....and oh, has it been mentioned?? NETWORK!!!
And, networking means be a contact, be a friend, be an expert on something, be a resource, be a facilitator, be someone who gives something before expecting something. Be a key.
Networking is a two-way street, but you have to be a giver to become a receiver. Help someone and they’ll help you.
