Let's get U.S. back to work... |
McCrabby interviews, sells soul, still no job offer
McCrabby had an interview yesterday. It isn't really like McCrabby expects to get a salaried job now. He's doing equipment leasing, planning to do another jobs-workshop for other folks, and doing a little writing. He doesn't make much on any of those tasks, but hopefully all together, he can earn some kind of living. He's pretty good at all three things (in his own mind)...
Back to yesterday -- McCrabby got a call on Monday from a large India-based company, with a location four miles from McCrabby's house. They needed a sales manager for their local area, to manage 4-8 sales staff.
The 20-minute preliminary phone-interview went well. Margaret was really nice, asked a few sales and management questions, laughed often, and seemed to genuinely like McCrabby and what he said. At the end of her prepared questions, she said "we'll definitely be calling you back." McCrabby's heard that before.
Wednesday, Margaret called back. She asked if McCrabby could interview with Sunil on Thursday afternoon, and the date was set.
McCrabby doesn't even mention these interviews any more, since most (maybe all) are a waste of time, but he dutifully told Mrs. McCrabby he'd be going out to an interview, dangling the tease of a steady paycheck in her face.
To net it out, the interview was ten minutes.
Sunil: "Tell me about your background."
McCrabby: "I got my sales and management training through IBM, and ran my own company for 15 years, managing all aspects of the company. I wrote policy, negotiated contracts, hired/fired, mentored, blah, blah, blah.... for 2-4 minutes of background."
Sunil: "Do you have BPO experience and the ability to sell to C-level executives??" NOTE: BPO stands for "Business Process Outsourcing" and McCrabby had looked it up, because his website research unveiled it.
MC: "I've sold services for years, whether it was IT, or financial services, and I've managed teams of sales people for 20 years. We didn't call it BPO, at the time. As to the C-level question, I sell almost exclusively to CEOs and Presidents, as those are the decision-makers that can make financial decisions for companies, and in equipment leasing, those are the contacts I normally deal with."
Sunil: "So you don't have real BPO experience. It sounds like you would need to learn about BPO in order to sell in our marketplace. I don't really see a fit here."
MC: "Thank you. Blah, blah, blah.. Good bye."
Thanks, Margaret. It was nice meeting you."
Recap: McCrabby was interviewing for an Indian Outsourcing company. OMG - talk about selling your soul... That's a constant punch-line in McCrabby's routine; we need to quit outsourcing jobs. So, why did he even go? Because they dangled that salary carrot..
Today, we re-dedicate ourselves to our equipment leasing work. If you know of any company or municipality that needs money for equipment, let us know at McCrabby@humantransitions.com. If you would like to do that kind of work, let us know that, too.
Good luck to you on finding a job you can be satisfied with.
