Hiring Mgr really wants to hire...

Dear Readers:

McCrabby has taken a couple of shots at a hiring manager (see previous 2-3 posts at this site) who commented that she (yes, we found out it is a "she") couldn't get anyone to respond.

McCrabby promised to post her position here, so true to a commitment, here is her response.   If you are interested in finding out more about her opportunity, contact McCrabby (HERE) and he will put you in touch with the hiring manager right away.

You should know that her position is a commission-only job, but that she believes it has large potential.  Her response (after we blasted her for not responding in a timely manner) is below:
______________________________________

Dear McCrabby,

I am the lady who owns her own company and hasn't been able to find many people willing to work. If you know someone who would like to work in sales with earnings potentials of 6 figures we are the real thing. This is not a network marketing firm.

When I opened up, we hired a variety of types of people and it seemed we had to hire two times for every position even though we use professional staffing companies and personality testing.

Now we are looking for true sales people. They must test appropriately with the correct skills. If you know someone, and if they follow up after a few interviews, send thank you notes and test correctly we will be happy to bring them on board.

Hiring now...
--------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Hiring:

I have published your note, leaving out the parts that identified your company, as you requested.  If McCrabby receives any responses asking for information, he will direct applicants to you.

As noted in the reply-note that McCrabby sent back to you, commission-only jobs are fairly plentiful, and applicants never know if this is a real position, or an attempt to throw 30 people at a job, hoping two will stick.

That may explain, to some extent, the responses you have received, or that you have NOT received.  However, if your opportunity is real, McCrabby is happy to direct people to at least check it out.

Good luck to you, and to the applicants.

McCrabby

You gotta WANT the job--Hiring Mgr says

Another anonymous reader posted  a comment to our posting about (Dear McCrabby, Everyone that wants a job, has one... Really??) and McCrabby thinks it is worth posting here, because he (or she) is correct - this is a problem..

For those that haven't read the previous post, you might want to read the link above before you continue here.
____________________________________

Dear McCrabby.

No I'm not in HR.  I'm a business owner right here in Michigan who is over 50 years old. We have been hiring for the last 18 months. You have no idea how many people I've met who told me they want to work but then decide they want to wait until unemployment runs out.

I recently was invited by a non profit to meet with 20 people looking for a job to help them with their interview skills. Unbeknownst to them I was also looking for staff. They all brought me their resumes. I suggested they follow up with me on linked in or send me an email. I got one response out of 20 interviews.

For those that gave me a resume, I sent them onto other business owners also looking to hire in their field. One man in the same field as my business I would have hired. He was 60 something but didn't follow up. We would have loved to bring him on but I'm not chasing people down to give them jobs. That is the job of the person who wants to be hired.

For every story you have about not being hired, I have the same story regarding people I've tried to hire. I don't care how old they are or what color they are I just want people who want to work. If people want jobs they need to follow up and show interest in being hired. We don't hire people who are crabby because our customers don't like that being treated that way.  (Editor's note:  was that a crack at McCrabby?  We'll let that go)

Looking for professionals
________________________________________

Dear Looking...

McCrabby responded to your comment in the post, but isn't sure you got it, since you posted anonymously.  So, it is repeated here:

I wish you had put your name so I could be sure to contact you, but hopefully you'll get this.. I agree, in part, with what you say. There are some schmucks who want nothing more to feel sorry for themselves and milk the system.

That being said, I have had 300 people go through my workshops, and if you'll send me what type of job you're hiring for, I will forward it on to qualified, motivated, hard-working folks who are looking for a chance. Many of them are working now, but many are still searching and some are very underemployed.

I was a hiring manager, and I felt your frustration.   I interviewed some of the people you discussed in your response.  I didn't hire them either.
But, let me know what you are searching for, and I'll find you someone good.
Thank you.
McCrabby

So Looking, please call me, or email me; I'll get your message out to at least a couple hundred folks who want to work.  I won't coach them (already did that), but I'm certain they'll follow up.  Unemployment doesn't pay much, so if you have people waiting for it to run out, you're right - they aren't very motivated.   And, who wants em anyway??   There are good ones out there.

Thank you for your response.  Communications is key.

Let's talk.

Is the hiring manager an idiot?? McCrabby's scoring system

Is the hiring

          manager an idiot??

A SCORING SYSTEM from McCrabby....
1. When I'm asked to recruit a new candidate, I:
a. Advertise jobs that don't exist
b. Interview 40 people, don't call any of them back, and don't hire anyone
c. Make verbal assurances of an offer, and then never offer (and joke about it)
d. All of the above.
2. To determine who gets interviews, I:
a. Look at Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter for the best looking candidates
b. Throw 50 resumes into the air and interview the ones that land print-side-up
c. Phone-screen 20 candidates, tell them I'll call them back, and go play golf
d. All of the above.
3. During the phone-screening interview, I:
a. Ask questions that have nothing to do with any job
b. Look for people with 20-years of experience for trainee positions
c. Cut my fingernails, and ignore most of what's said
d. All of the above.
4. In the face-to-face interview, I:
a. Make several commitments for which I have no intention of follow-through
b. Ask questions that are designed to irritate the applicant
c. Take phone calls, straighten my desk, and eat a sandwich
d. All of the above.
5. When it's time to make an offer to a qualified candidate, I:
a. Delay the event for at least a week, testing the candidate's staying power
b. Call back at least three applicants for ONE MORE interview
c. Offer one-half of whatever the last job paid the candidate
d. All of the above.
Each (a) answer is worth one point, each (b) answer is worth two points, each (c) answer is worth three points, and each (d) answer is worth four points.
Five points:         Stupid
Six to 11 points: An Idiot
12 to 17 points:  A Complete Idiot
17 to 20 points:  A Consummate Hiring Manager

Have a great weekend...

20 Stupid Interview Questions - McCrabby's answers

Last week, McCrabby read a post on 20+ stupid interview questions, and it asked for responses.

The surprising part was that a bunch of people answered them in replies and comments to the post.

So McCrabby decided, he should take a shot at his own answers.  Here are the twenty stupid interview questions, and the answers McCrabby would recommend (please add a few of your own, if you are so inclined):

Q) Why was your GPA not a 4.0?
A) Because I never cheat.

Q) There 1,000 buckets, one of them contains poison, the rest of them are filled with water. They all look the same. If a pig drinks that poison, it will die within 30 minutes. What is the minimum number of pigs to you need to figure out which bucket contains the poison within one hour?
A) I'll just have a diet Pepsi, please.

Q) How many piano tuners are there in Massachusetts?
A) Probably more than there are in Alaska.

Q) Name three things that, if you were told were part of the job, would cause you to not take the position.
A) Commission-only, working for you, being asked a question like this

Q) A 22-year-old girl, who is getting a bachelor’s degree, is taking her 100-year-old grandmother for her driving test. What can you say about this family?
A) Nice kid, but she should just drive Grandma where she wants to go - Note to Grandma.. QUIT DRIVING - TAKE A BREAK!!!

Q) If for some reason you came in late to work (weather, woke up late, etc), how would you compensate our company for the time?
A) I guess I'd ask them to look at all the extra hours I've already put in, such as the eight hours of interviews I've been put through.

Q) Do you mind not seeing your family, wife, or children for weeks at a time?
A) Yes

Q) How much is one over two times the square root of pi?
A) It equals one-half the square root of pi (was that a trick question?)

Q) Why should we hire you? You don’t seem like our type.
A) You know what?  I don't think you're my type either.  Your secretary is cute, though.

Q) There are 25 horses and 5 race tracks. How many races need to be run to select the top 5 horses?
A) One - run em all at once on one track.

Q) Sing a few lines of your favorite song.
A) "Take this job and shove it - I aint workin' here no more....  My woman done left and took all the reasons - I was working for "

Q) Have you ever stolen pens from work?
A) No, but I have a nice calculator and a leather chair from my last job; wanna see em?

Q) If you had to get rid of one of the 50 United States, which one would it be and why?
A) Where do you live?

Q) Having an infinite supply of water and two containers, one for 3 liters and one for 5 liters, how would you measure 4 liters?
A) I remember Bruce Willis did that in Diehard III.. Jeremy Irons was the bad guy (you should watch it sometime).  Anyway, Fill the 5 liter container and than pour it into the 3 liter container.  That leaves 2 liters in the 5 liter container. Now, empty the 3 liter container, and then pour the 2 liters from the 5 liter container into the 3 liter container.  Fill the 5 liter container. Pour the remainder of the 3 liter container from the 5 liter container.  Since the 3 liter container already had 2 liters in it, one liter from the 5 liter container will fill it leaving 4 liters in the 5 liter container.   I think Samuel L. Jackson helped Bruce Willis figure that out, and they saved New York City.

Q) We see you have cooking as a hobby on your C.V. Are you pragmatic or academic when it comes to cooking?
A) I'm usually hungry.

Q) You are on a game show. There are three doors. Behind one of them is a prize; the other two have coal. The host knows which door holds the prize. You choose door #1. Before it is opened, the host opens door #3 and reveals a lump of coal. You have the choice to stick with the door you chose or #2; what do you do?
A) I can't get the coal?  This planet is running out of fossil fuels.

Q) How many people can you fit into Texas?
A) How many people want to go?  It's hot there.

Q) How many scale measurements does it take to know which of eight balls weighs the most? How many would 28 balls take?
A) You have a lot of balls, asking that question

Q) Can a stack of quarters the height of the Empire State Building fit into a normal-sized room?
A) Not in a single stack.  Otherwise, yes.

Q) Tell me a joke.
A) Henry Kissinger, Ghandi and a hiring manager are on a plane that 's getting ready to crash.  Kissinger and Ghandi take the parachutes and jump to safety.  The hiring manager asks one more stupid question.

Q) Estimate the revenue of M&M’s in the US.
A) Probably about the same as me; they don't have a job either.

Q) If I were to tell you that you aren’t ambitious, how would you refute me?
A) How did you know that?

Q) Why are manholes round?
A) Aw, come on; are you really going to ask that old question?  Round makes them impossible to fall into the hole.

Did I get the job?

McCrabby's weekend video on age in the interview process

Congress tells us that the economy's improving; Americans fear a recession is coming; the president's approval rating is 40 per cent;  The  approval rating for Congress is 12 per cent, but incumbents are re-elected at a 90+ per cent rate; foreclosures continue to rise..   And job-levels are "stable."  What does that mean?  Are any of these facts surprising??

Here is a Dilbert video for the weekend relating to age in the hiring process.  Here's hoping you can smile about it.  After all, it's the weekend.

NOTE:  McCrabby's move information will be published next week (as soon as home sale is finalized, etc.).  Come back and see where he's going...

For now, enjoy the video:

Subject: ANOTHER Situation -Sarcasm, Insight, or Comedy Please
Sent:      Wednesday, August 31, 2011 11:52 AM

Dear McCrabby,

It has happened yet again! Why are people that are doing hiring these days either stupid or mean or both?

Situation: Three weeks ago I began the interview process for a marketing research position I was very excited about, not to mention a great match for. Flew me out to LA for the day to interview with the CEO and others at HQ. Feedback was positive. Hiring manager indicated they were "moving toward making an offer". This was on a Friday, asked until Monday or Tuesday to get back to me with something more concrete. Late Tuesday afternoon CEO emailed me that they wanted me to meet head of marketing research at one of partner firms in this venture.

Hiring manager ASSURED me this was only a courtesy interview and that this person had no say in the decision to hire me. In fact, he mentioned during this conversation that his plan was to be in Dallas the Tuesday,Wednesday, and Thursday following Labor Day to work with me. Met this person this past Friday. Great interview. At end of interview, this person said to me "I have no doubt you can handle this position but think it is more than 1 person can handle. I will let you sort that out with them after you get in there"

Called CEO and hiring manager after to interview as requested and left my feedback in voice mails. Both emailed me late Friday afternoon that they would definitely be touch on Monday. Late Monday afternoon CEO emails me that he wants to "introduce me to the new strategic marketing consultant" and asks me what I would be available for a phone interview that afternoon. I told him anytime that afternoon. Turned out not to be until 10A yesterday morning. Conversation last an hour. Called hiring manager left message.

Finally connected with hiring manager late yesterday afternoon. His first question was how the conversation went earlier in the day. I replied "Great". He then asked, a bit questioningly "Did it?". I told him I had thought so etc.

He then informed me they had decided to pass because the last two people had felt I did not have enough database management experience and that all the data crunching was below me. I replied that I found that puzzling since neither one had ever asked me a question about my database experience.

And remember he had assured me that the person from last Friday had NO SAY in my hiring, but apparently he did. Did not confront him on this, even though at this point I had nothing to lose. The hiring manager told me there was going to be a lot of growth toward the end of the year and that he definitely wanted to keep in touch with me and he was sorry things worked out this way. I asked him "Since I did not fit into this position then with all the upcoming growth what position DO you see me fitting in to?" He replied that since he had not met me in person it was an unfair question. HMMMM didn't seem to be a problem not meeting me for this position. I have no intention of keeping in touch with him.

I was shocked and stunned and  very angry. He lied to me several times through the process. And yes I know - that tells you that you do not want to work for the company.. but in the 6 months I have been out of work I have come close on 3 positions, and in all 3 they have strung me along and then handled the conclusion in an immature and very unprofessional way. I can handle not being the last man/woman standing. But why do they have to act so childish and unprofessional? And treat the candidates this way?

In less than 4 hours I go into the final round of interviews for another position. I know that I am 1 of 2 finalists. I should be ecstatic... one that I have this opportunity... two that  timing is such that it is right after this... but right now I am feeling shell shocked.. and scared and wondering what this next company is going to do to screw me around. I know that is not the right attitude. I even had two (fellow) Alums pushing and pulling for me in this last position. They did their best...

Any advice???

Thanks!!

Dear Double-D,

Wow!!  Even though I’ve heard this often, way too often, it is shocking each time.  And your first paragraph sums it up.  They are either stupid or mean; probably both.  It’s frustrating, maddening, and shakes one’s confidence.  You always wonder, “Why?  What payback do they have for treating you in this manner?  What reason do they have for stringing ANYONE along and then pulling the rug out?  I don’t have the answer.

If you would like to talk about it, please call.

I wish you the best and I am genuinely rooting for everyone that is going through what you going through.  It’s an amazingly-changed hiring world out there, and it hasn’t improved much in the past three years, despite what our politicians tell us (Congress has a 12 % approval rating, yet keeps getting reelected – how stupid is our electorate?).

McCrabby

NOTE:  Double D posted a follow up, the next day, which is detailed HERE
