New legal stories - McCrabby has GOT TO RANT

McCrabby read the newspaper today - it's time for a rant...

OMG, can you believe our legal system.  In today's Detroit News, there are several stories detailing the antics of  the players in the U.S. legal system.  In order to keep this blog succinct, only two will be addressed.

Number one, is the sad, sad story of a nine year old Alabama girl who died from exhaustion after being forced by her grandmother to run like a Marine recruit for three hours.  The young girl's stepmother was at the site of the incident and did nothing to intervene.

The nine-year-old was being punished for allegedly lying about eating a candy bar.

Now, the grandmother is in jail and the stepmother is being held in a location where she just gave birth to another child.  Both are charged with murder.

The stepmother's attorney has stated that she was "incredibly devastated over Savannah's death" and that the stepmother's innocence would be proven.  Really??  They went on to say, Unfortunately, whenever a child passes away, our society wants to place blame, our media wants to sensationalize and our elected officials want to make grandiose statements that are not based on fact."  McCrabby agrees with that point about politicians (another blog post coming??  Maybe...).

The grandmother's attorney maintains that she will be cleared of any crime.

When the grandmother believed that Savannah had eaten a candy bar and lied about it, she started the punishment.  Savannah's stepmother did not stop the punishment or call 9-1-1 until the little girl collapsed.  She died later at the hospital.

Everyone deserves a legal defense.  How would you like to defend these people?

Number two isn't sad, except for it's indictment of the U.S. legal system.

A woman from a Detroit suburb is suing the company that repossessed her car (for non-payment) because they did not return the half-tank of gas she had when the car was taken.  She has filed a $5 million class-action suit against the company.  $5 million??  REALLY??   How big was her tank?

As her attorney explained, "It's the same as if you left your jacket in there and they didn't return it to you."  (note:  that's an expensive jacket).  He continued, "You can't take someone's coat or fuzzy dice, and you have to return the gas."

The attorney on this case said he believes it is the first lawsuit to address this issue.  He says that this is a serious case, although he admits that some people may snicker at the facts.  "Everyone I've told this to says: "That's stup -- wait a minute, that's genius," he said.  Genius??  WOW!!!

And, the best part???  This attorney said that he plans more lawsuits against other banks.  "They're all doing this," he added.

Three points here that should be added:

  1. The woman owed $5,800 on her car when it was repossessed
  2. What's she going to do with the gas -- the car is gone
  3. There were two more attorney stories, but McCrabby didn't want to write a book (yet)
