MI Road Sign - Keep it Slow so Your Tires Won't Blow

Dear McCrabby,
When you talked about potholes in Michigan roads last week, you detailed the problems.  But, what about solutions?  How can we fix these roads when we don't have any money?

It must be nice to be able to point out the problems, but not have to deal with the solutions.  But, I need to provide solutions, so my job is tougher.  Walk a mile in my shoes, why don't you?   The buck stops at the office of the Gov.

Dear Gov:
OK, you got McCrabby.  And, you're right.  We see our mission here as two-fold:
  • Publish ideas, tips, problems and news about job-searching and the events associated with that task

  •

    Mile-marker 168.0

  • Uncover and point out the absurdities of life that betray common sense, many that become humorous for their lack of logic

We never promised solutions.  But, in this case we'll try to point out the obvious AND provide a solution.

How often have you driven down the expressway and counted the  mile-markers on the side of the road?  McCrabby talked to a sign maker last week who told him those mile marker signs would probably cost about $120 each (if he could be so lucky as to get the contract to supply them), and another $50-$100 per sign to install them.   We're going to average that to about $200/sign.

Do you realize that most Michigan expressways have mile markers ever two tenths of a mile?  If we take just one expressway (I-94) which travels 275 miles across Michigan, the cost of putting mile markers (don't forget to multiply by two, since we go east AND west), would be $550,000.00  (for 2,750 mile marker signs).  That road is 1,604 miles across multiple states, so imagine what the total might be.

Luckily, we got this message just in time -- McCrabby slowed down
Gov, don't we think that money could be better spent fixing the roads?  In a previous post (http://t.co/A5PgsID), we discussed potholes and how our roads need fixing.

In this day of cell phones, GPS devices, and reliable cars, do we need a mile marker every two tenths of a mile?  How about every mile? If someone breaks down we can still pinpoint their location fairly closely.  And, why do these signs need to be in color (that must increase the price)?

And, since we're talking signs, let's get to McCrabby's new favorite government expense.  That would be those quarter-million-dollar eyesores that we have erected along our city highways (there are several in McCrabby's hometown), which provide nuggets of wisdom and witty slogans, that can be changed by a government worker being paid by our tax money.

Have you seen these?  The one above, is on I-96 in Livonia, and this picture was taken on a sunny day, although it had snowed the night before.  You can see how important that message is, and we're lucky it was there because McCrabby saw several people slowing down as they passed - NOT.  This message had wit and wisdom in the same message; what a service they provide for our community?  Of course we have to slow down to avoid the potholes (in fact, maybe that could be the next message, "Keep it slow so your tires won't blow...").

Thanks for reading, and good luck on your new job, Gov..  We're counting on you, and FOR you..
