McCrabby rants on attorneys.. again - suing over popcorn??

McCrabby has got to stop reading the news..  The Sunday papers seem to be perfect fodder to start a rant, and after last week's rant (Read 2/25 post:  LEGAL NEWS - A NEED TO RANT), McCrabby thought he could put legal news on the back burner.

But today, there is a new batch, and as was the case last week, only two will be detailed.
The first, comes from the City McCrabby just moved from three months ago (Read 11/08 post:  MCCRABBY is MOVING) and deals with a place McCrabby visited often.  In Livonia, MI, a movie-goer has initiated a lawsuit against a theatre chain because their concession prices are too high.  His lawyer claimed that his client was tired of being taken advantage of.
Another movie patron, when asked about the class action lawsuit, commented "When I was a kid, $1 could get you into the movies and buy you a pop and a popcorn, but not anymore."  REALLY??  McCrabby asks that question a lot in these rants, but REALLY?  How old is that lady??

Has this woman bought a tank of gas lately (couldn't resist from last week's rant - if you'll read it, you'll get it), or lunch at McDonalds?   Has she bought a new car or a gallon if ice cream (they have shrunk the gallon, you know - take a look)?  What about the daily needs of life -- toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, medical care, insurance, the costs the public incurs for having to put judges in place to rule on these types of lawsuits -- aw come on -- POPCORN??

Do we really need a popcorn lawsuit?  Here's an idea:  if the price is too high, don't buy the popcorn.  The uninsured are going without medical care; McCrabby isn't sure that popcorn should even be in the news.  In fact, Mrs. McCrabby had some opinion on this after standing by McCrabby on a couple of lawsuits, but we can't print Mrs. M's assessment here - and for anyone that knows the missus, they know that's pretty rare.

OK, enough of popcorn..  Number two is a typical "hit a home run - get rich off the rich" type of lawsuit.

In 2009, a woman working with Paula Abdul (McCrabby is not a fan, and only knows this from doing the research on the rant above) slipped and fell on Abdul's driveway.

She hurt herself so badly, that she sued Abdul and Abdul's production company.  Last month, she was awarded $900,000 from Abdul's portion of the settlement and $100,00 from the production company - the woman became a millionaire from her own clumsiness.

OMG, does this seem in line with any sense of fairness?  Does the court system, attorneys, judges, ANYONE have any touch to the real world?  McCrabby has heard about dog bites being settled for $350,000 -- McCrabby will let any dog in the world bite him for that kind of money.

Does any other country put up with these kinds of suits?  Does anyone wonder what it costs the common consumer in terms of increased insurance rates, clogging up the legal system, and larger bureaucracies required to handle the flow?  McCrabby wonders - and is looking for common sense solutions.  There don't seem to be many.

Have a great rest of the weekend and good luck on your job searches...  Maybe the courts have some openings...

Have a great weekend,
