Scam jobs: how do we know, McCrabby??

Scam jobs:
how do we know, McCrabby??

Dear McCrabby,

I got invited to an interview, I think..  It's tomorrow at 7 pm..  Should I be concerned, or is that becoming more common to do off-hours interviews?  Should I take a bodyguard?  Is it a scam?

Dear Wary,

They might be casing your house.  You leave at 6:30 to head to the interview, and they're ripping off your house by 6:40.  They're out, and on the road by 7:15, when you start heading home.  That being said, most of us searching for work are probably not the best targets for burglars; we've already sold most of our stuff.

More likely, it's a multi-level-marketing meeting (maybe, SCAMWAY or SCAMPERED CHEF?), where you can make money by inviting your friends, your family, your church, your business colleagues, and anyone else you can think of to spend a bunch of money to sign up to do what you'll be doing.  Heck, McCrabby invited you guys into one MLM, but the difference was that it didn't cost ANY money.   (Check it out)

Or, it's a work-from-home, stay-in-your-sweats, not-too-hard-of-work job where they promise you'll make $1500 - $9000 / month part-time (you can make big bucks if you'll go full time).

Or, it's an insurance sales trainee position, not that insurance is a bad job.  But, they bill it as sales management, which like any good job, is there once you prove for a few years that you're a really good sales trainee, then sales rep, and hit quota for 6-8 years.  If you're 60, that doesn't work.

McCrabby was invited to a similar interview to you, Wary, and considered going.  Instead, we considered the time to be invested, the distance to travel, and decided to try to keep the conversation open, if the job is legit.  We hope that the following reply does that (you might try a similar approach to your "opportunity"):

"Dear Scamual,

I appreciate the invitation.  You indicated you were seeking experienced producers, who could build teams, train people, motivate sales, and deliver results.  I can do that.

However, after reviewing our conversation and your invitation, it appears that you have invited me to some sort of group orientation or group interview.  I can assure you that I am unlikely to accept a position that does not warrant a one-on-one discussion to review the needs and goals of your organization, and how a candidate, like me, can address those needs and goals.

I have found that most “group” orientations are for entry-level, commission sales positions, often in insurance or similar markets, which provides no interest for me at my age and level of experience.

I apologize if I appear dismissive of the opportunity you offer, and if my assessment is in error.  However, I need to maximize my time and when I asked for more information via phone, you indicated it would all come out in the meeting.  Again, if preliminary information is not available, I have found that the opportunity is generally not a position for me, often times involving MLM or a commission-only, ramp-up period.

I wish you well on moving forward with your plans.  And, if you would be willing to provide more preliminary information, I’d be happy to talk further.  I have just come to the conclusion, after  some time exploring my options, that I am unwilling to spend time on group interviews for un-described opportunities.

Thank you for contacting me, and expressing interest.  "
You're right; that probably didn't keep the door open.  But, it probably wasn't much of a door.
