McCrabby's Job-Search Pet Peeves Part II
You knew there'd be more...
You knew there'd be more...
Dear McCrabby -
Thanks for your pet peeves. You certainly hit a few of mine, and I'm going to send you a couple others that really rankle my senses (tomorrow). I think you really hit something when you put job-searching topics and common sense in the same blog. There seems to be a lot of synergy for combining those topics.
I've seen some comments about your peeves, and wondered if your list had expanded.

Dear Rankled,
It's part II of pet peeve day at McCrabby's place. Part One is here: PART I, and the post that started most of this commentary, Reject the Rejection, is here: REJECTION
PART II
McCrabby has gotten the question multiple times, "Why do I feel like a failure for not having a job?" You are not alone. Many people experience this, but this is a unique time in our country and in our world. A lot of people have lost jobs and are searching for work and for answers. Stay positive, and don't give up. Things will get better, and you need that positive attitude to help make them better.
Here are a few more that might getcha as you're searching for work.
- The link to apply didn't work correctly -- Keep in mind that some employers will purposely put in a link that has a glitch, just to see how resourceful you are. Try to figure it out; it may be a glitch...or it may be a test.
- .I don't apply when I'm not qualified, but others impact the whole process by doing that -- that is correct, and there really isn't a good answer to it. People are desperate and it's so easy to apply on line, that a couple extra clicks are easy even if you probably aren't qualified. Keep applying for the jobs where you are qualified.
- Every job seems to be commission-only -- Employers today hold the cards. If you want a sales job, there is a good chance it's 100-per-cent commission. They don't have to pay big salaries, so they don't. Try to differentiate yourself by showing why you're worth a salary, but it may be an uphill battle.
- I see the same employers for months on career-builder or monster; don't they ever hire? They may still be searching, turned the job over, and are looking again, never really had a job and were collecting resumes... Or, they may not have filled it. They may advertise constantly because of high turnover. It's a hint that you need to investigate before you start working there.
- I almost ended up being their unpaid consultant during the interview process -- Been there, done that; McCrabby had five interviews with one company, and spent hours and hours with the president and a VP looking for ideas. They were finally told that McC had lots of ideas, which would be happily shared as an employee of their company; McC is not working there. Probably won't.
- Employers have horrible, unmotivated, ineffective employees, but they keep them, while I'm motivated, effective, etc. -- Here's a suggestion to employers: take your worst 20, or 10, or 2 employees and fire them. They seem to have an entitlement attitude and don't work very hard anyway. There are lots of good people looking. Call McCrabby, and we'll recommend replacements from our workshop, of people who are working hard to find work, who are motivated, articulate, eager, and ready to get to work.
- Benefits don't start for 120 days? -- See commission-only point above; employers hold the cards; try to justify your value and maybe they'll move up the time delay.
- They invited me to an interview and ten other people were in the room with me -- this is typical for a trainee type of position. If you're an experienced manager, run from this interview because you are going to be a trainee. They'll probably want you because you'll be the most talented in the room, but....
- That's the end of my pet peeve list. Wanna add to it?????? And, please stop in next week when we'll visit some common sense issues, like the law (always fun to look at), Michigan roads (a topic filled with potholes), and maybe even the common sense of partisan politics (what else can we say? We'll think of something).. We hope you'll come back and read again. Good luck on your job search, Rankled...
